Gorilla trekking tours in Africa are the most fascinating activities carried of by travellers / tourists from all over the world. Gorilla trekking refers to the process by which trekkers accompanied with Rangers and tour guides head out deep into the forests in groups through different tails in search for the habituated gentle giants, the ‘’Mountain Gorillas’’ in the jungle. Every gorilla trekking team is composed of 8 members which is the maximum number of visitors to interact with a particular gorilla family. Upon reaching these gentle giants, you are allowed to spend only one hour with them giving you an opportunity to learn their behaviours. Gorilla habituation is the process of preparing mountain Gorillas to live nearer to individuals as they go on with their everyday lives. Gorilla habituation process happens in Bwindi national park. The gorilla habituation experience is extremely amazing since one spend more time with the mountain gorillas, as compared with the one hour of Gorilla tracking. Gorilla habituation experience takes place in Uganda in the misty forest of Bwindi National Park and it takes four hours where you are given a chance to observe the gorillas in the wildlife. Gorilla Habituation in Uganda only takes place in Rushaga sector in the southern part of Bwindi National Park where only 4 People are allowed to per day to visit that gorilla group which is under the habituation process. In Africa, Gorilla trekking (tracking) tours are carried out in only three Destinations that is say Uganda, Rwanda and Congo.

Bwindi Gorilla Trekking Sectors

The primary trekking destinations for mountain gorilla tours are Buhoma, Ruhija, Nkuringo, and Rushaga. Unquestionably, the most thrilling tourist activity that the majority of visitors choose to perform in Uganda, notably in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park, is gorilla trekking. Gorilla trekking is a very early activity that begins at 8 p.m. local time and lasts for 30 to 5 hours as tourists move through the jungle with armed rangers and guides in search of the designated gorilla family. After the exhaustingly long walk with the critically endangered mountain gorillas, the action is highly fascinating with tourists taking pictures. The four top gorilla trekking areas in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park are Rushaga, Ruhiija, Buhoma, and Nkuringo.

Buhoma gorilla trekking sector in Bwindi impenetrable forest National Park:

The Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park’s northern region, in the Kanungu area, is home to the oldest trekking route in the national park. It is one of the gorilla trekking areas and home to Mubare, the oldest gorilla family, which initially welcomed visitors in 1992.
Tourists frequently inquire about the availability of gorilla permits in Buhoma, which are in great demand because to the sector’s competition. Three gorilla families are housed in Buhoma, including the oldest, the Mubare gorilla family, as well as the Habiyanja and Rushegura gorilla families. Since a group of eight individuals is allowed to see each gorilla family, Buhoma has 24 gorilla permits available each day.

Travelers that trek the Buhoma sector have the chance to visit the Ishasha sector of Queen Elizabeth National Park, where they can go on safaris with naturalist guides and see lions that can climb trees. It only takes two hours to travel from Kabale town to the Buhoma gorilla trekking sector of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park via Kanungu. You can also travel from Kabale town to the Buhoma section via Queen Elizabeth National Park’s Ishasha sector, which is famous for its tree-climbing lions. And from here, taking this path will take you 4 hours to go to Buhoma.

There are cozy lodging options nearby that range in price from cheap to luxurious. Among the top-notch lodging options around the Buhoma gorilla trekking area are Buhoma Lodge, Bwindi Guesthouse, Bwindi Volcanic Lodge, and Mahogany Spring Lodge.

Rushaga Gorilla trekking sector in Bwindi impenetrable forest National Park:

In the Bwindi Impenetrable Forests National Park, the Rushaga section is one of the greatest places to undertake gorilla trekking. The Kisoro District’s Rushaga Sector, which is located in the southern portion of the Bwindi Forest Park, is known for housing the majority of Bwindi’s habituated households. The Rushaga gorilla trekking sector is exceptional since it is the only one where the gorilla habituation process currently takes place.

It just takes 4 hours to travel from Rwanda’s capital city of Kigali to the Rushaga Gorilla Trekking Sector in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, which is home to the highest concentration of gorilla families—more than five in number. Trekking in this area provides tourists with additional adventure activities like hiking waterfalls and engaging in cultural interactions; it is undoubtedly a singular experience away from home.

Visitors will have the opportunity to participate in gorilla tracking habituation, which allows them to spend up to four hours with gorillas, as opposed to just going on a gorilla trek, which lasts for an hour as long as the gorilla family is spotted. The Rushaga sector has the highest number of gorilla permits when compared to other sectors. In Rushaga, as in other areas, the price of a gorilla permit is 700 US dollars, while the cost of the habituation process is 1500 US dollars.
Both the internal airport in Entebbe and the international airport in Kigali, Rwanda, offer access to the Rushaga Gorilla trekking area in the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park. Compared to the 7 or 8 hours it would take to get from Uganda’s Entebbe International Airport to Rushaga, it only takes 4 hours to get there from Kigali. Due to the proximity, the majority of guests choose to fly to Kigali before continuing on to Rushaga. From Rwanda, you can trek to Uganda to see gorillas. In Rushaga, there are first-rate hotel options where you may stay while taking part in the adventure of gorilla trekking. Notable examples of these lodges are Gorilla Safaris Lodge, Rushaga Gorilla Camp, Bwindi Jungle Lodge, and Chameleon’s Hill Lodge, among others.

Nkuringo gorilla trekking sector in Bwindi impenetrable forest National Park:

The Nkuringo gorilla trekking sector has the fewest habituated gorilla families of any of the zones and is located in the southernmost portion of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park in the Kisoro district. This area was designated

Nkuringo because of the well-known Nkuringo family, which was headed by Rafiki silverback, who was killed later in June 2020 by poachers despite the death of the well-known silverback, the gorilla family has remained strong and continues to draw many tourists who come for gorilla trekking in this region.

18 individual gorillas make up the Nkuringo gorilla family, which was first habituated in this area in 1977. Occasionally, members of the Busawo gorilla family who cross over from the Rushaga trekking sector will join them.
You must be physically fit to hike this gorilla sector in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park since the Nkuringo gorilla sector is located at a high altitude and trekking at this altitude is more demanding and strenuous. A maximum of 8 persons are permitted to visit the gorilla family each day, just like any other gorilla family. Keep in mind that Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park has a 15-year-old age restriction for gorilla trekking.
The Nkuringo gorilla trekking sector in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park is reachable by the Kabale–Kisoro route, and it takes 10 hours to get there from Kampala. You can also choose to travel the less crowded and shorter Buhoma, then Kihihi, and then Nkuringo hiking sector.

In addition to gorilla trekking, the Nkuringo sector offers various visitor activities, such as bird watching, escorted nature hikes through Kishasha, and visits to the Batwa short-tailed people who lived there before the park was established as a national park.

You can stay in high-quality lodgings that are comfortable, such as the Nkuringo Gorilla Camp. The best services are offered by Nkuringo Safaris Budget and Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge, which serve both domestic and foreign cuisines.

Ruhijja gorilla trekking sector in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National park:

The Ruhija gorilla trekking area is located in the Kabale district’s Eastern Perk of the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park. The Orugoza gorilla family, the Bitura gorilla family, and the Kyanguriko gorilla family are three habituated gorilla families that may be found in the Ruhijja gorilla trekking sector. All of these groups are accessible and available for tourist hiking.

Only eight people are permitted per gorilla family group in the Ruhijja gorilla trekking sector of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park, as is the case with all other gorilla trekking sectors in the park. Only 24 gorilla trekking permits are available in the Ruhija gorilla trekking area of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park, according to this information.

While on a gorilla trekking tour in the Ruhijja gorilla trekking region, you can also choose to participate in other safari activities, such as bird viewing and visiting conservation community initiatives, among others. Birders can find various bird species in the Ruhija Gorilla trekking sector, including hornbills and flycatchers, among others. To make the most of your birding experience, you should have binoculars and cameras with you.

The lodging options nearby the Ruhija gorilla trekking area are pleasant and make going on an orangutan trek simpler for you. Agandi Lodge, Gorilla Mist Camp, and Trekkers Tarvan Lodge are a few of the hotels close to the Rujija gorilla trekking region. The setting is wonderful and all the services are excellent.

The greatest time to go on a gorilla safari in any sector of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park is during the dry season. However, all of the major gorilla trekking sectors may be visited at any time of the year. Less rain is likely to fall during the dry season, which can occasionally make paths impassable and treacherous.

Every year, the dry season lasts from June through September and from December through February. Importantly, you can reserve your gorilla trekking sector in either of the aforementioned sectors during the wet season since this is when birds are active and you can take advantage of the lower hotel rates.
